With more than 15,000 observations, Madrid, Barcelona, and Cádiz are in the TOP5 European cities during the City Nature Challenge
Madrid, Barcelona, and Cádiz have uploaded to Natusfera platform almost a half of the observations registered in Europe during the City Nature Challenge (Biomaratón in Spanish). There have been two new arthropod species registered in the Iberic Peninsula.
The citizen science platform Natusfera, used to register biodiversity data in the mentioned cities, was the European platform which summed up more observations to this event, between April 27th and 30th.
The international event was complemented with an identification work where a number of experts tried to identify the largest number of species previously observed. On May 3rd, there were two ID parties in Barcelona and Madrid where most of these experts were working together.
The success of the Biomaratón has been possible thanks to the illusion and passion of all the participants. The Spanish coordinating organizations want to thank participants for their well-reception and commitment to the event, including both people who have uploaded observations during the activities and people who have supported the identification of those observations. We would also like to highlight the amazing work done by the entities and councils organizing activities, disseminating the event, and providing locations and facilities. Thank you very much!
Natusfera is the European platform which summed up more observations
In Barcelona, Cádiz, and Madrid, 320 people registered 15,612 observation in Natusfera, almost a half (47%) of the total observations registered by the 11 participating European cities.

TOP5 European cities in the City Nature Challenge. Regarding the number of participants, Cádiz was the 10th city in the ranking with 25 participants.
Cádiz stands out in the international ranking
The City Nature Challenge has achieved that 68 cities around the world have registered 441,888 observations made by 17,329 different people. San Francisco Bay Area, Dallas and Fort Worth, and San Diego County have been the indisputable winners. Nevertheless, Cádiz has been the city with the highest percentage of observations with a research degree (70.5 %). This means observations with picture or audio, geolocalization, date and time, and identified by the expert community of Natusfera.
