OpenStreetMap

OpenStreetMap Useful not only as a source of geographic data analysis and publication, but for ‘map backgrounds’ when displaying data. Technically easy to use. Exporting in different formats. License very liberal compared with some other commercial providers such as Google Maps. Quality of data variable though.

Open Refine

OPEN REFINE This generic ETL (Extract, Transform and Load) tool is very useful for working with messy data, in general (transformation, analysis etc.). The three tutorial videos in their website provide a good overview of what is possible to do or be adapted to biodiversity data without too much trouble.

Google Fusion Tables

GOOGLE FUSION TABLES Although not a data quality tool itself, some of its features can make data quality assessment easier. For instance, it allows easy map (or charts) creation from tabular data, easy hosting / online sharing, geocoding locations, etc.
