Experts’ Meeting: GBIF in support of the indicators for the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework
Experts’ Meeting: GBIF in support of the indicators for the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework
Rationale, Opportunity for Action and Specific Objective
The new Global Biodiversity Framework approved in Montreal places a greater emphasis on transparency and monitoring of actions compared to previous frameworks, which necessarily requires an increased involvement based on data and scientific evidence.
The role that GBIF can play in this new scenario is clear, but for it to be effective, it is necessary to understand the requirements from the CBD and how GBIF can provide information for progress indicators and NBSAPs (National Biodiversity Strategies and Action Plans).
In Latin American countries, due to limitations in resources allocated to science, management, and conservation of biodiversity and ecosystems, there is a circumstance where, in some cases, the responsible teams for the national GBIF networks (Nodes) are also involved in CBD meetings and negotiations. This limitation becomes an opportunity as it provides members of these teams with a unique perspective of both worlds, placing them in a privileged position to inform and educate the GBIF community on how to best contribute to the objectives and goals of the CBD.
The specific object of the meeting was to establish recommendations and actions for the nodes and GBIF Secretariat in this field, which can then be replicated and extended to the global GBIF community.
