Description

The Herbarium was established in 1977 and is affiliated with the Botany area of the Department of Botany, Ecology, and Plant Physiology at the University of Córdoba (Spain). It is located on the Rabanales Campus, just outside the city of Córdoba. This herbarium, registered in Index Herbariorum under the acronym COFC (Thiers 2019; http://sweetgum.nybg.org/science/ih/), houses three botanical collections: one of fungi and two of vascular plants—the historical collection and the general collection, the latter being the most significant. The general collection contains an extensive representation of the vascular flora of the province of Córdoba and other regions of Spain, along with a modest selection of plants gathered from neighboring countries (Portugal, France, Morocco, etc.). It mainly consists of wild plants, with only a minimal presence of ornamental species. Beyond its educational and academic significance, this collection serves as a valuable resource for research, having contributed to the development of important works such as the Flora Vascular de Andalucía Occidental and Flora iberica. In recent years, the collection has grown significantly due to numerous plant gatherings across the Iberian Peninsula, conducted as part of the taxonomic revision of various genera for the Flora iberica Project. As a result, it is now one of the herbaria in the peninsula with the largest representation of the genera Centaurea (Asteraceae) and Festuca (Poaceae), both of which are known for their high diversity and taxonomic complexity in the Iberian Peninsula.
