It is specialized in sedges (Cyperaceae, especially of the megadiverse genus Carex) and Resedaceae, mainly from Europe, the Iberian Peninsula and the Mediterranean Basin, in accordance with the main lines of research by researchers in the institution. However, it is also home to a broad spectrum of angiosperms from these and many other parts of the world. It currently consists of some 18,000 herbarium specimens, and is in full growth and digitation stage.
