Description
The Marimurtra Botanical Garden was founded in Blanes in 1921 by the German businessman and naturalist Carl Faust (1874–1952). Driven by his passion for nature, Faust began acquiring land in 1918 to acclimate exotic plants from across the globe. In 1951, he established the Carl Faust Private Foundation, which continues to manage the garden and ensure the continuity of its scientific legacy. From its inception, the foundation maintained an international perspective, guided by the prominent Catalan botanist Pius Font i Quer as its main advisor. With over a century of history, Marimurtra is one of the most significant botanical gardens in Catalonia (declared a Cultural Asset of National Interest in 1995 and awarded the Creu de Sant Jordi in 2009). The garden is currently implementing a rigorous Living Collections Plan focused on scientific excellence and specimen traceability. Marimurtra is an active member of key global networks, including Botanic Gardens Conservation International (BGCI), Genmeda, the Spanish Society for Plant Conservation Biology (SEBICOP), AIMJB, and AHIM.
