The University of Granada has presented a online learning platform about Sierra Nevada, as part of the Smart EcoMountains, which seeks to raise awareness about biodiversity and global change in the Mediterranean mountains. The initiative offers a wide variety of educational resources accessible online that includes an interactive atlas of the mountain massif, infographics and foldouts to identify endemic species.

The online learning platform about Sierra Nevada also includes numerous visual resources of great interest and educational value, such as educational sheets, an interactive gallery dedicated to the unique flora of the Sierra Nevada and documentary videos that explore the evolution of the mountain range, sustainable agriculture or communal water management. In addition, informative tools are offered such as podcast episodes, photography contests, participatory research projects or the “Sierra Nevada Biodiversity Diary”.

This platform of educational resources about Sierra Nevada is part of the set of initiatives of the Smart EcoMountains project, whose main purpose is the creation of a thematic center on biodiversity, global change and sustainable development in mountains with international projection, using Sierra Nevada as a case study. Knowing the biodiversity of mountain ecosystems is essential to protect and preserve biodiversity around the world.

The Smart EcoMountains project, developed by the University of Granada in collaboration with the European research infrastructure LifeWatch-ERIC and the Diputación de Granada and co-financed by European funds ERDF Pope 2014-2020, it has The objective is to create educational content and management tools that inform society about the most important global change processes that affect biodiversity and the ecosystem services of mountains.

Those responsible for the project have highlighted that this initiative is an example of the convergence between the scientific and artistic world and shows the importance of interdisciplinarity in the creation of quality educational resources, by providing a meaningful learning opportunity for audiences of all ages and backgrounds.
