Annual Training Plan 2023
Please find below the training activities the Coordination Unit of GBIF Spain has planned for 2023. In some cases, the provided dates are approximate. This year, we are returning to normality in training activities, both virtual and on-site. For detailed information on past training activities, please refer to the section on activities organized by GBIF Spain.
Enrollment in training activities does not entail any cost. The selection of admitted applicants is based on what they contribute or can contribute to the overall goals of GBIF and the national node, as well as the specific characteristics of each activity.
The “more information” links, which lead to the complete details of each workshop, will become active as the workshop dates approach and their contents are confirmed.
III GBIF.ES Online Workshop: Utilization and Exploitation of Biodiversity Data Portals from GBIF and Our Environment for Users and Publishers
This theoretical-practical workshop aims to explain how to use the Biodiversity Data Portal of GBIF Spain and the International GBIF Portal, supported by guided exercises on their main functionalities.
Date: March 24th – April 5th 2023
Duration: 12 h.
Mode: Virtual (GBIF.ES eLearning platform)

GBIF.ES Workshop: Standardization and Publication of Marine Biodiversity Data in GBIF and Scientific Journals (Data Papers).
This theoretical-practical workshop aims to enhance participants’ ability to prepare and publish biodiversity data, using the procedures and portals of GBIF as a guiding thread. Aspects related to data quality, cleaning, and refinement, standardization, and publication through the Integrated Publishing Toolkit (IPT) will be covered, as well as the preparation of manuscripts for publishing data papers.
The workshop is especially aimed at researchers who work with marine data.
Date: March 21st – March 22nd 2023
Duration: 12 h.
Mode: On-site (C/ Joaquín Costa, 22. Madrid)

XVI GBIF.ES Workshop: Ecological Niche Modeling
In this practical workshop, participants will study the concepts and techniques required to create species distribution models using the statistical software R. To participate in the workshop, it is necessary to have at least a user-level knowledge of the R and RStudio computer tools, as well as geographic information systems.
Date: May 2rd – May 26th 2023
Duration: 26 h.
Mode: on-site (C/ Joaquín Costa, 22. Madrid)

II GBIF.ES Workshop: Collections Databases and GenBank.
The advancement of biodiversity studies hand in hand with molecular techniques and new ecological approaches in recent times has been remarkable. However, the lack of procedures and practices to make the conclusions of these studies reviewable questions the solidity and scientific validity of many cases. In this context, the importance of collection specimens as a cornerstone of the scientific method in these studies is increasingly recognized and accepted. This situation presents an opportunity for collections, provided that they publish their data online with links to GenBank and collaborate with GenBank repositories to link to the backup specimens. The how-to of accomplishing this is the focus of this workshop.
Date: June 13th – June 14th 2023
Duration: 10 h.
Mode: On-site (C/ Joaquín Costa, 22. Madrid)

VII GBIF.ES Workshop: Digital Images for Biodiversity Studies
This workshop will cover the process of capturing, managing, and publishing digital images of collection specimens and other images related to biodiversity research projects on the internet. This includes slides, microscopic preparations, and more.
The topics to be covered will span from the necessary equipment and its setup (optics, lighting, etc.), capture techniques, and image processing to the (meta)data to be collected for publication.
Date: To be confirmed
Duration: 26 h.
Mode: On-site

II GBIF.ES On-Site Workshop: Optimizing the Use of R in Research: New Tools for Programming, Manipulating, and Visualizing Biodiversity Data
This workshop is aimed at researchers who need to strengthen their knowledge of R and at undergraduate and predoctoral students who need to learn how to use the new tools in R. The first day will be focuses on querying, refining, downloading, etc. GBIF data with R, and the second day will be focused on how to visualize them..
Date: December 13th – December 14th 2023
Duration: 15 h.
Mode: On-site

Utilization of Crowdsourcing Approaches for Transcribing Data from Scientific Specimens through Images
This workshop will explore the possibilities and limitations of setting up citizen science projects focused on transcribing labels from images. An overview of the available options in the context of the GBIF node will be provided. There will also be a practical component, promoting and supporting the implementation of such projects within collections associated with GBIF.ES.
